Challenges for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2026

💰️ The team restructured Patrick Mahomes’ contract. This move to convert some of Mahomes’ 2026 salary into a signing bonus frees up cap space for the upcoming season, but they are still $11M over the cap. It’ll be fascinating to see what kind of free agents the team can attract without a ton of money and coming off a losing season.

⚖️ Rashee Rice’s ex-girlfriend filed a lawsuit. The allegations from the lawsuit, which became public yesterday, are truly disturbing. The wheels of justice turn slowly— especially when it comes to the NFL—but it’s hard not to see severe consequences coming down the pipeline. KC will need to find answers at pass catcher, especially with Travis Kelce’s potential retirement still looming.

🐬 A Tyreek Hill reunion? Not sure a Hill and Rice combo would be good for anyone, but the national media is already banging the drum for a KC/Reek reunion. It’s worth mentioning that since our recent post about Hill, there have been some serious concerns voiced by doctors about Hill’s recovery.

🔮 The 10th overall pick. If there’s one positive for the Chiefs right now, it’s that they have a high draft pick for the first time in ages. The big question is whether they’d pull the trigger on an elite RB like Jeremiyah Love and shore up a major offensive deficiency, or if they would instead try to do so in Free Agency.

Fernando Mendoza: From Three-Star to THE Star

Few people saw Fernando Mendoza coming. He was not highly recruited out of a Miami high school and started during a pair of 6-7 seasons at Cal. But what we just saw in an unbeaten national championship season, where he was named the Heisman Trophy winner, hardly ever happens—shoutout Joe Burrow. Back to Mendoza, Ian Hartitz put on his college scouting hat to look at the tape and see what will likely compel the Raiders to take him No. 1 in the NFL Draft. Here’s just one quality that stands out:

Toughness: Both physically and mentally. Mendoza repeatedly proved willing to stand tall in the pocket and deliver ropes downfield, even with a big hit coming. Ohio State and Miami, in particular, largely beat the crap out of this man early, but it never seemed to get to Mendoza. Throw in gritty game-winning touchdown drives against Iowa and Penn State, and it sure seems like Mendoza has whatever "it" is.

NFL Scouting Combine Sleepers: Who’s the Next Star?

We’ve all seen what the NFL Scouting Combine can do for a player’s scouting profile. Xavier Worthy’s record 40-yard dash is still talked about reverently. Matthew Golden zoomed his way to the first round last year. Maxwell Hairston and Nick Emmanwori joined him in showing out in Indianapolis. Who’s next?

Coach Gene Clemons identified eight players who could light up the field at Lucas Oil Stadium, and possibly starring for your fantasy teams in the fall. Ted Hurst is one player who could see his star rise:

If you're talking about a rare athlete, Hurst is the guy. This is a young man who in high school started at wide receiver and cornerback. He was a starter on the basketball team and averaged 16 points and 8 rebounds a game. He also finished second in the state in the long jump at over 22 feet. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound receiver is well documented for his speed and explosiveness in game, averaging 15.5 yards per reception. He could potentially put on a show at the combine, especially in the explosion drills.
